Uncompromised Pinot Noir

With caves tunneling deep into the Santa Cruz Mountains and vineyards so steep they have to be farmed with a one-of-a-kind tractor moved by cables, Clos de la Tech is one of the most ambitious and innovative Pinot Noir producers in California.

Pinot Perfected

Our goal is clear: to make the New World's Best Pinot Noir. In doing so, we hope to seriously challenge the greatest Burgundies that have dominated premium Pinot Noir production since the 13th century. Our approach is one of meticulous stewardship of ancient tradition that often means bowing to nature's whims combined with innovative techniques that serve to only enhance what nature has given us.

  • Clos de la Tech produces five Pinot Noirs from three Estate vineyards:
    • Domaine du Docteur Rodgers, 1 acre, hand-farmed site in Woodside
    • Domaine Valeta, 3.5 acres, 2,350 feet above sea level in the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA
    • Domaine Lois Louise, an extraordinarily steep, ocean-exposed, 163-acre property in the Santa Cruz Mountains AV
  • Extreme terrain (high elevation, steep, exposed, austere soils)
  • Incredibly low yields (often less than one ton per acre)
  • Vine-by-vine farming
  • High-density planting (4,150 vines per acre)
  • Careful matching of rootstock, clones and trellising to terroir
  • Innovative equipment designed by owner TJ Rodgers
  • Three gravity-flow, step-down caves
  • Hand harvest
  • Foot crushed grapes
  • Whole cluster fermentations
  • Native yeast fermentations
  • One-of-a-kind, TJ Rodgers’ designed tractor (to navigate steep hills)
  • One-of-a-kind, TJ Rodgers’ designed press to maximize flavor extraction
  • 100% François Frères Oak Barrels
  • Bottled unfiltered

Meticulous Care

At Clos de la Tech we believe that great wines begin in the vineyard. That’s why we take great pains to follow many of the best winemaking practices established at renowned Burgundy houses almost 200 years ago. This includes the expensive practice of planting three to ten times more vines per acre to achieve the high degree of concentration afforded by an extraordinarily low yield per vine. Tour our vineyards.

Whole Clusters

Our "minimalist" approach to winemaking begins with whole cluster, native yeast fermentation. Our experimentation at Clos de la Tech showed that this process effectively reduces the amount of seed tannin in the wine and increases the amount of stem tannin in the wine, resulting in bigger wines with rounder, softer tannin.

Authentic Cooperage

Sharing the same cooperage house as the world's best Burgundy producers, Clos de la Tech ages its wine in famed François Fréres French oak barrels from the Bertrange forest. Unlike its American or Hungarian counterparts, François Frères barrels impart a very understated, elegant oak flavor which allows us to age in new barrels for every harvest without over-oaking the wine.

About Clos de la Tech

"T.J. Rodgers is the owner and winemaker for Clos de la Tech. He has been making wine since 1996. Our first vineyard is the premier one-acre vineyard, Domaine du Docteur Rodgers, which produces only 100 cases of handcrafted Pinot Noir annually."
